#1. The 6 Human Needs

Tony explained this in his famous TEDTalks video. We all share the same 6 fundamental human needs and they influence our lives and our decisions. We generally value two needs significantly more than the rest.  Here they are:

  • Certainty—a feeling of security and knowing that you can avoid pain and gain pleasure
  • Uncertainty/Variety—the need for the unknown, surprise, change, new stimuli
  • Significance—feeling special, unique, important, or needed
  • Connection/Love—the need to love and be loved by someone or a strong feeling of connection with others.
  • Growth—an expansion of personal, professional and spiritual development, capability, understanding or wisdom. If you're not growing, you're dying.
  • Contribution—a sense of being of service to others and create an impact in other people's lives.

#2. Trade Your Expectations for Appreciations

Do you want to know the formula for happiness? Here they are: trade your expectation for appreciation and your life will change instantly. Expectation is about living in the future and looking forward to seeing what you can gain, or looking to the past for what you could have gained but didn't. Expectation makes you live outside of the present. Appreciation, on the other hand, is about living in the now. You appreciate what you have in this moment from the small things to the big things, from the tangible to the intangible. You look for abundance, not scarcity. You are grateful for your assets, possibilities, things that others have done for you and things that you have taken for granted such as your health, your heart and your life. By shifting your focus, you will be in a better and resourceful state to solve your problems.

#3. Be Grateful

If you ask people to write down the emotions they experience on a daily basis and look at that list, you will see most of the emotions are negative emotions which don't really serve them. The key to be happier and fulfilled is gratitude. Many studies have shown that gratitude increases our level of happiness. You cannot feel fearful and grateful at the same time. From now on, when a problem occurs, ask yourself what you can be thankful for. It's not about being naive and pretending the problem isn't there. But it's about putting yourself in a resourceful mental state so you can find better solutions. Remember problems are what make us grow.

#4. Decision Equals Destiny

Your life today is the result of a series of decisions you have made. If you had made different decisions, your life would have been very different, wouldn't it? Here are the 3 important decisions we always make every time we face a challenge: What Things Mean, What You Choose to Focus On and What You Decide to Do. If your life isn't the way you want it to be, it's time to make better decisions.

#5. Repetition Is the Mother of Skill

If you see someone who is successful, they didn't get there by doing things once in a while. They consistently practice every day. If you see someone who is super fit and muscular, you know that person goes to the gym every day or at least 5 times a week. As Tony said, "People are rewarded in public for what they've practiced for years in private." Whatever area you want to be successful at, it's time to commit to mastery. That's how you will get there.

#6. Self-awareness

Knowing yourself is so vital for success. If you don't know who you are and what makes you tick, you will have a hard time trying to achieve whatever you want to achieve. So who are you? How do you define yourself? If you want to give up smoking but you always believe that you are a smoker, you will go back to your smoking habit even after you have successfully quit for a while. Tony explained that the strongest need in our human psychology is the need to stay consistent with how we define ourselves. Whatever you believe about yourself, you will live with it, unless you decide to change.

#7. Be Resourceful

Have you ever failed at anything? What are the reasons why you fail? Is it because of your leader, your employees, and your co-worker, lack of capital, time or knowledge? Whatever the reason might be, it can be summed up as the lack of resource. But is it really true? It might be, but the ultimate resource is resourcefulness. Because if you are creative, playful and persistent enough, you will get through any obstacles along the way. So it's not the lack of resources but rather your lack of resourcefulness that stops you. Resources are never usually the problem, resourcefulness is almost always the problem.
